5.1 Introduction
Thischapter explainshow to use the chartfunctionsto navigatewith your
display.It coversthefollowing topics:
• Usingchartcards.
• Controlling waypoints, includingplacing, moving, editingand deleting
waypoints.
• Workingwith routes,includingcreating anewroute,managingroutes
usingthe routedatabaseand editingroutes.
• Followingroutesand going to waypoints.
• Transferring Waypoints and Routes
• Usingtracks,includingshowingtracks,settinguptracks,savingtracksand
creatingaroutefrom a track(SmartRoute).
Allthesechartfunctionsareavailablein plottermode, so you can plotand
trackroutesat largescaleseven when a chart cardis not installed.
Furtherfunctions,includingmeasuringdistancesand settingalarms are
describedinChapter 6.
Safety
Thechartplottermakesitveryeasy to placeawaypointand traveltowards it.
However,youshouldalwayscheckfirstthatthe routeis safe.Ifyouareusing
thechartplotterin combinationwith a SeaTalk autopilot,theautopilotwill
promptfor confirmationbeforeitsteersthe vesseltowardsthewaypoint.
Ifyou have enteredyourroute usingasmall-scalechart,zoom intoalarger
scaletocheckforhazards, suchas small shoals,thatmaynot be shownonthe
smaller scale charts.
Note:Until you are familiarwith interpreting the chart display,you should
takeeveryopportunityto comparethe displayedobjectswithvisualtargets,
suchasbuoysand coastalstructures.You should practiceharbourandcoast-
alnavigation during daylightand inclearweather conditions.
CAUTION:
Theequipmentshouldnot be usedas asubstituteforgoodnavigational
practicenorforofficialgovernmentpapercharts.
