introductiontothePathfinderPlusRadarMARPAsystemandshowsyouhow
tousethe MARPA functions,you shouldalsoreadSection 7.5.
MARPA improvesthestandardof collisionavoidancebyobtainingdetailed
informationfor severalautomaticallytrackedtargets.MARPAprovides
continuous, accurateandrapidsituationevaluation.
Youcanacquireup to tentargets,whicharethenautomaticallytrackedbythe
MARPAsystem.MARPA calculatestargetbearing andrange,truespeed and
course,CPA(ClosestPointofApproach),andTCPA(TimetoClosestPointof
Approach).
Eachtrackedtarget canbe displayedwithavectordepictingapproximate
target speed(vectorlength)and course(vectordirection). The calculated
targetdatacanalsobeshownonthescreen.Eachtargetiscontinuallyassessed
andyou are warned ifone becomes dangerousor is lost.
Effective MARPA operationisdependenton accurateownship’sheading,
plusSOG andCOG. The better thequalityof the headingdata, the better
MARPA willperform. (MARPA functionswithout SOG and COG data but
onlyrelativevector, CPA and TCPA areshown; targetcourseandspeed

Thereareconditionswhereacquiringatargetmaybecomedifficult.These
sameconditionsmaybe a factorinsuccessfully trackinga target. Some of
theconditions are:
Thetargetecho isweak.
Thetargetis verycloseto land, buoysorotherlargetargets.
Thetargetor yourown shipis makingrapid manoeuvres.
Choppysea stateconditionsexistand the targetis buriedin excessive
seaclutteror indeep swells.
