Providing Heading Data for Radar/Chart Overlay and MARPA
TheperformanceofMARPA andRadar/ChartOverlayis dependentonthe
qualityofyourheadingsensor.Itisimportantthatboththeheadingsensorand
theradarscanner(bearingalignment)arecorrectly calibrated.Refertothe
appropriate headingsensorand radarscannerhandbooksfor calibration
details. Thebettertheaccuracyofyourheadingdata,thebetterthe
performance of MARPAandRadar/ChartOverlay.
Agyrocompassprovidesthebestperformanceinallconditions.Alternatively
youcould use a fluxgatecompass withrategyro stabilization.
MARPA requiresheadingdata to be frequentlyupdated(werecommenda
dataoutputrateofgreaterthan8Hz);headingdatamustthereforebeprovided
to the display on NMEA.
Inmultiple-display systems, heading must be connected, via NMEA, to each
displaythat will be used for MARPA.
Werecommend thePathfinderSmartHeadingSystem(which includesthe
Gyro Plus 2 unit). Good results are also obtained with a Raymarine autopilot
systemincorporatinga150Gor 400G CourseComputer withinternalrate
gyro.
Otherheadingsensorsconnectedon NMEAmay provide satisfactory results
inreasonableseastates.However,inunsettled conditionsarategyrocompass
isadvisable.
