Theradarpicturecan be viewed at variousscales.Theshortestrangescale
givesa maximumrangeof

nauticalmiles,measured fromthe defaultcentre
tothetopoftheradarpicture. Thelongestrangescalegivesamaximumrange
of between24 and72 nauticalmilesdependingon yourscanner.
•Thelongrange scalesprovidethebestoverviewofyour vessel’s relation-
shipto land masses,weather frontsand largeshiptargets in or beyond
view.
•Theshortrangescalesprovidegreaterdetailof the radarechoes closeto
yourvessel,andshould be used as you approachthe coastline,harbouror
othervesselsin the area.
ThePathfinderPlusRadardisplayincludesconcentricrangerings,whichyou
canuseto help you to judgedistancesontheradarpicture.Their number and
spacingareadjustedautomatically if youchange therangescale. Theycanbe
turnedoff(see SwitchingRadar Range RingsorChart Grid OnandOffon
page2-13).

below.Ifyouwish,youcancustomizetherangescalesbyspecifyingdifferent
ranges,as describedin Section 7.4, RadarSetUp Parameters.

Thenumberofrange rings shown in thetableis the number to the selected
range.Additionalrangeringsare displayedto the edge of the radarpicture,at
thestandard ringintervalforthecurrentrange, andare visiblewhenthecentre
is offset.
