4.2 Changing the Heading Mode
Theradarpictureis normally shown withyourvessel’s deadahead bearing
straightup,as indicatedbytheShip’sHeadingMarkeratrelative bearing.
Thisis the Head Uporientation.
Ifheadinginformationis availableviaaSeaTalkorNMEAconnection,you
canchoosea differentheading mode.InCourseUp andNorthUp mode you
canalso selectrelativeor true motion.
True and Relative Motion
Relativemotion isthe defaultfortheradar display. In relativemotionyour
ownship’s positionremainsfixedon the radar screenandall radar targets
moverelativeto yourown ship.
Intruemotion,fixedradar targets maintaina constantpositionon the screen,
whilstyour own ship movesacrossthe radarimageattheappropriatespeed
andheading. Amap-likeimage isthusdisplayed, withall moving vessels
travelling in true perspectivetoeachotherand to fixed landmasses.
Asyourship’spositionapproachestheedge of the screen,the radar displayis
automatically reset toreveal the areaahead of your ship.Youcanmanually
resetyourship’s positionatanytimeby pressingthe TRUE REL soft key twice.
Heading Modes
Theheadingmodes are as follows:

HeadUp: The radarpictureis displayedwiththe vessel’s currentheading
upwards.As the headingchanges the picturewillrotate.
NorthUp: Theradarpictureis stabilizedand displayedwith north
upwards.As you change heading,the ship’sheadingmarkermoves.
CourseUp: The radarpictureisstabilized and displayedwith thecur-
rentlyselectedcourseupwards.Asyouchangeheading,theship’sheading
markermoves. If you selecta new course, thepicture resetsto displaythe
newcourse upwards.
